7/5/2008 James J Patton Marathon Finals

Well to no one’s big surprise the DQ Williams Kennel won the finals of the 2008 $30,000 James J Patton marathon, but the greyhound that won well that is a whole different story.

Most of the people though that defending champ Santa’s Playgirl should be the one to catch on the lead and if she couldn’t get it done then Penny Candy, who went undefeated in the rounds, would have a good shot at taking the title at the wire. Little was though of the third entry, Racheal Lee, but I guess more attention should have been paid to her in this race.

You see Racheal Lee has never won a race over 770 yards, granted she has been close on a couple of occasions but winning against the toughest marathon greyhounds the circuit has to offer, that was just too much. Well I guess not! You see Racheal decided to break and was way close early on in this effort.

As most expected Santa’s Playgirl stole off with the early lead and was in command of this race from the start all the way to the stretch. Her lead did shrink throughout as Racheal chased in second and Penny Candy was just off in third.

As they turned for home it looked like it might be a DQ sweep, but Kiowa Pretence would have none of that. He was on his mission from the back of the pack and before it was all over it was going to get very interest up front. Playgirl clung to her slim lead as Racheal, Penny and Pretence started to close. With every step they got closer and closer and at the wire we needed a photo to separate them. You see for the second stakes final in a row at the Orange Park Kennel Club, the top four greyhounds at the finish line were all within a couple of lengths.

Racheal proved a neck better than the super closing Kiowa Pretence as Santa’s Playgirl settled for a game show. Penny Candy wound up in 4th as was a mere length and a half off of the winner at the wire. Completing the field was Gs Rambo in 5th, Xtra Style in 6th, Uss Contender in 7th and Sweetsouthern in 8th.

Congrats go out to the DQ Williams Kennel, owner Sharon L. Williams and trainer David Helton to yet another stakes title on the Jacksonville Racing Circuit. It has been a while as their last major stakes victory came in this exact race last year with Santa’s Playgirl. As always DQ brings the heat over the added distance races as you can see with the first, third and fourth place finishers in this event.

Proving once again why they have been a mainstay at the top of the kennel rankings here, the DQ Williams Kennel always shows up with quality greyhounds who give quality efforts.
