Night of Stars

7/3/2009 Night of Stars Finals

The 22nd edition of the Night Of Stars race for the Orange Park Kennel Club was a barn burner. All kinds of talented was weaved throughout the 8 post positions and with a good mix of early and late speed it was going to be a very interesting race to watch.

As Rusty cleared the final turn and the box opened up, some thought that they were watching a replay of Night of Stars 21. Only one greyhound returned from that race, Citation Cam, and she did just what she did at the start of last year's event, she broke to the lead. Driving to the first turn clear of the field she was in command of this race for the second straight trip and early on it looked like maybe no one would get to her before the finish line. The other big early speed greyhounds in the race all decided not to show up at the start. Sure by the turn they were getting into position, but were already too far behind to challenge the leader in this race for the win. The only true closer, Pru Whistler was 5th at the 1st turn, but the backstretch would change all that. Cam continued to coast on the lead and at the far turn he had some good and some bad news. He had increased his lead slightly by a half a length, that was the good news, the bad news, the best closer in the field was now in second with his eyes set on the leader. As they headed up the stretch cam was still motoring all out on the lead and Whistler was getting closer and closer with every stride. As this pair approached the wire, Cam was searching for the lights and in desperation mode as Whistler was relentlessly on the chase. At the wire it would take a photo to separate the duo with Pru Whistler coming out on top. With this victory Whistler stretched her current win streak to 6 races in a row, and for Cam she got the big disappointment all over again. For the second straight year she ran a huge race and just couldn't hold on enough for the win. Third here was the recent winner of the JGR Puppy Stakes, Fth Keystone Cop. Normally a front runner, Cop really gave a great effort for a puppy in this race. He didn't give up at any point and even after double trouble in the turn, he continued to keep on coming and held on to show easily at the wire. Stakes veteran La's Anthony also had to work here as he was a long way from the rail in the 8 box at the break and encountered trouble trying to get there in this effort. He too rallied a bit late to steal away the final spot in the superfecta in the deep stretch tonight. Rounding out the field was Lk Sweetums in 5th, Rs Libby Lu in 6th, Gs Dallas in 7th and Kiowa Kay Wilber in 8th.

Congratulation go out to the DQ Williams Kennel, Owner Sharon L. Williams and Trainer David Helton for yet another stakes title on the Jacksonville Racing Circuit. DQ is always on top in the kennel standings and it is reflective in the quality of greyhounds that they have running in their kennel. This race was Pru Whistler's first stakes title here, but the kennels 5th in the last 11 attempts.
