7/11/2009 James J Patton Marathon Finals

Proving that her nomination to the 2008 All-American Team was no fluke, Penny Candy demolished the field in the finals of the 2009 James J Patton Marathon Stakes. With this victory she posted up her second stakes title on the year as she also was the winner of the 2009 Orange Park Derby back in February.

Breaking from the inside 2 box, Penny really came out running and was battling for the lead all the way to the turn. There she took command and as they say, IT WAS OVER. All she did for the rest of the race was draw away from the field. She increased her lead at every call and was 7 lengths clear of the rest of the field at the finish line. She stopped the clock at 43.74 seconds, which was the fastest time of any of the races during this event. Running second was Deco Insta Hart. In just her 5th career race over the 770 yard course, but with this effort you could never tell it. She chased the leader throughout and never gave up at any point during the race. She comfortably was next best tonight. Last year's winner Racheal Lee missed her break at the start of this race and was behind the traffic at the 1st turn. She rallied throughout, but it was really too little too late as she took home the finals spot in the trifecta at the finish line. Another finalist from last year's race fared better this time around. Xtra Style overcame trouble in the turns and bolted home in a hurry to steal away remaining spot in the superfecta. Completing the race was Eds Go For It in 5th, Lover Girl Bambi in 6th, Glo's Legend in 7th and Kiowa Fuzzy Fern in 8th.

RACE REPLAY

Congratulation go out to the DQ Williams kennel for yet another stake title on the Jacksonville Racing circuit, especially in this race. We have held this event for 3 years and no one but the DQ Williams kennel has won this event. In 2007 Santa's Playgirl won, in 2008 Racheal Lee won, and in 2009 Penny Candy was the champion. I would be amiss not to congratulate the trainer David Helton and everyone else involved with this fantastic athlete.

Another milestone could be added shortly for this talented greyhound as she is knock, knock, knocking on the door of the 80 career win plateau. This one was number 74 and in a few short months she should join the all time list of great names in greyhound racing. If she reaches that magic number, her resume is looking pretty strong in 2009 as well. Two stakes titles and all-time recognition, sounds like a repeat All-American to me.
