6/7/2008 JGR Puppy Stakes Finals

The final of the 2008 $20,000 JGR Puppy Stakes was just what a stakes final is supposed to look like. Some of the best greyhounds on the circuit going head to head, paw to paw and toe to toe for the duration. This was one of the most exciting races in a long time here at the Orange Park Kennel Club and if you missed it, you must check out the replay. (LINK)

Hanks Cody might have gotten the jump on the rest of the field at the 1st turn, but the big names were not far off. Take It Over had cleared in second just off the leader down the backside and Mrl Runner was rebounding from trouble at the 1st turn to get into contention as they charged thru the far turn. The real race ensued as they turned for home. Unlike Cody, he gave no ground late and just kept on keeping on the lead. Take It Over was still right there on his hind end and Runner found some room on the rail and was gaining with every step. Closer and closer they got to the wire and everyone knew this was going to be a photo finish. In the deep stretch another greyhound thru his hat into the ring as Las Anthony finally broke clear of the crowd and was coming on in an extreme hurry. At the wire all of the greyhounds would be separated by less than a length and the winners by only a head.

Proving best? Take It Over. This greyhound ran a huge race and lunged at the right time, at the wire, for the victory. Mrl Runner just missed in second and a game Hanks Cody rounded out the trifecta. LAs Anthony was just off in 4th place as the field was rounded out by Uss Know It All in 5th, Flying King in 6th, Kiowa More Am in 7th and Hanks Madison in 8th.

Congrats to the B & J Racing Kennel, Owner Henry Howe and Trainer Chris Grieb as they finally got it done with an undefeated greyhound in the finals of a puppy stakes. B & J has been in this position before twice and even though they won one of those races, neither Fth Jive Talker nor Deco Daron Hart could win the big one.

Everyone knows how much speed and talent Take It Over posses and in this race with his 5th win in a row and undefeated stake run, his legend is growing. With 20 wins in his last 24 races this greyhound is making a case as one of the best greyhounds in the country and with his track record speed it might just be a matter of time before we have a new name at the top of the program.
