6/6/2009 JGR Puppy Stakes Finals

With his previous stakes experience, everyone at the racetrack on June 6th thought that Wired To Wind was going to steal away the victory in the finals of the 2009 JGR Puppy Stakes but that was just not going to happen. Sure he was the favorite. Sure he had a good starting box. Sure he had won three qualifying rounds, but that is all a moot point if you don't get it done in the finals.

As the Rusty approaches the starting box the field was wired with anticipation. The lid comes open and it is an all out battle for the early lead. Several greyhounds are in contention. It is anyone's race as they head to the turn. But who comes out on top as they make the first bend? Longshot Slatex Kabuki! He is just barely faster than the competition and stalking right on his heels is Fth Keystone Cop, Rs Libby Lu and race favorite Wired To Wind. Turning down the backside Keystone Cop pulls up closer and as they hit the tote board he is already into overdrive. Rs Libby Lu is still chasing a close second and Wired To Wind is trying to overcome being cutoff in the 1st turn. Toward the far turn they continue to run as Keystone Cop is in command and is stretching his lead on the rest of the field. Wired To Wind has righted the ship at this point and is driving up between Kabuki and Libby Lu on the rail. At the far turn, It's all Keystone Cop in the lead and as Wired To Wind gets pinched back, no one left chasing the leader has any shot at him before the finish line. Keystone Cop is all alone on the lead and in complete control of this race. Putting up more lengths before the finish line, Copper dominates to the finish and crosses an impressive eight and a half lengths better than the rest of the field. Rs Libby Lu survives a late run by Kb's Next Level for place as Wired To Wind completes the superfecta. Rounding out the rest of the finalists was Fth Fiyacracker in fifth, Slatex Kabuki in sixth, Nj's Noble Fred in seventh and Cjc's Knock Out in eighth.

Congratulation for the fourth time in a row to all the folks at the B & J Racing Kennels. Trainer Chris Grieb must have them ready to go as the streak continues on in the puppy stakes dominance. Kudos to owner Henry Howe as well. All of the previous winners, Craigie Cool Man, Take It Over, Count Ivan and now Keystone Cop, have all been owned by him. And as long as we are handing them out, how about a little love for CM Lil Bit. She is the mom of Keystone Cop and Take It Over, the last two winners of this race, and she has shown that the power lies with her.

So next up for this fantastic greyhound? The Sunshine State Silver Cup which gets underway in late August. That race is not going to be a cake walk though! He will have to face the best the racetrack has to offer at any age, including his own kennelmates, Count Ivan and Take It Over. Good luck in the future and congratulation once again on your stupendous victory, Fth Keystone Cop.
