4/4/2009 Jacksonville Sprint Classic Finals

That is what the best field in recent memory must have been thinking in the finals of the 2009 Jacksonville Sprint Classic. Ivan The Terrible, or should we say NOT terrible.

Count Ivan broke with the pack, but showed the form early on that had him recently win 11 races in a row. He drove to early control of the stakes final and was really going to make this field work if they wanted to catch him. Chasing in close proximity up the backside was the rookie Ru Tuff Enuf, Take It Over and All-American Kiowa Wish Frank. Ivan was not intimidated at all on the lead as he continued his pursuit of perfection, but Ru Tuff Enuf would not relent in second. He continued to pressure the leader throughout, but in the stretch it was apparent that Ivan was not going to be denied in this effort. Hanging tough from box to wire, Ivan gave a tenacious effort that saw him capture his second stakes title in a row with a victory in the 2009 Jacksonville Sprint Classic. With a game effort throughout Ru Tuff Enuf finished a close second and All-American Kiowa Wish Frank closed well down the stretch to steal away third place at the finish line. Take It Over was outgamed late by Kiowa More Am too and had to settle for 5th best at the finish line. Rounding out the field was Kiowa Spock in 6th, Cjc's Hercules in 7th and La's Anthony in 8th.

Winning this race against a super tough field was impressive, but let's not lose sight that he stopped the clock at 30.19 seconds. Just to let everyone know, that is almost a TRACK RECORD! He was just .05 or about a half a length off of the best time every recorded on the racetrack and frankly, the track wasn't really all that fast either. Showing the depth of this field, one should look at the rest of the times here to put them in comparison. Seven of the eight greyhounds in this race ran under 31.00 and for our racetrack, that is saying something.

Congratulations go out to Ivan, the B & J Racing Crew, Owner Henry Howe and everyone else connected with this tremendous greyhound. With this win Ivan has taken over the reigns as the top greyhound on our circuit and should be considered one of the best in the country. So far this year he has won 16 of his 19 races, including 11 straight, and a stakes title. Great start to the year and if he keeps it up he might have a shot at the win title and some bigger honors down the road.
