2/7/2009 Orange Park Derby Finals

Saturday evening the finals of the 2009 $25,000 Orange Park Derby was a shining example of what a stakes final is suppose to look like. All eight greyhounds finished within five and a half lengths of each other and it took everything the 2008 National Win Champ had to get the job done.

Early speed ruled thru the early stages as Wired To Wind and Kiowa Truefriend made the most of the post and came out running, but the monster was lurking and that is not a good thing for them as she has the late speed in this equation.

By the backstretch it was frankly a two greyhound race and the question in everyone's mind was, Could Penny Candy run down Wired To Wind before the finish line, or was she destin for back to back runner-up titles in the Orange Park Derby?

It took a tremendous effort and a photo to declare a winner as she gave her all in every stride down the stretch and poked her body in front near the wire for the win. Wired To Wind ran a great race on the lead, but the puppy got schooled by the veteran at the finish line. Kiowa Truefriend was a game third and the late closing Lover Girl Bambi completed the superfecta. Rounding out the rest of the field was Kiowa True Love in 5th, Xtra Style in 6th, Kat Jackofhearts in 7th and Dirty Picture in 8th.

Congrats go out to the monster Penny Candy. Finally a stakes title for this wonderful athlete. She has done it all here at the Orange Park Kennel Club. Won the Orange Park Derby, won over fifty races, just missed the all time win streak at 660 yards with thirteen victories in a row, and was the national win leader in 2008, but she couldn't have done any of that without the help of her trainer David Helton and everyone else at the DQ Williams Kennel.

What is even more impressive is that for the sixth year in a row DQ got two or more greyhounds into the finals of this race and this time around they got back into the winner's circle for the first time since Stopable Derrick won in 2004. But they didn't stop there, they not only won, they finished second and fourth too. What a great evening for them and once again it goes without saying that there are reasons why they have been the top kennel at the racetrack forever.

I would be amiss without congratulating owners DQ and Sharon Williams for this win and thanking them for sending us some tremendous greyhounds throughout the years here on the Jacksonville Racing Circuit.

Penny has made her case in each and every start on the racetrack over the last year. No greyhound tries harder than she does in each and every effort, this reason alone should get her considered as one, if not the best, 660 yard greyhound in the country right now.
