Tipsy Brutus W - Points (38)
Career Totals (40/7-6-6-11)
R M March 2008 Tipsy Character Jetstar Streaker
Owned By Leonard V Wood
Runs for the Crowe Kennel
Trained by Garnet Crowe
Now for the closing portion of the stakes final. Tipsy Brutus W is a picking them up and putting them down in a hurry in the stretch threat. This greyhound can come from downtown to steal away the win at the finish line and that is just what he did in the second round race. He came from nowhere at proved best at the finish line. He backed the that up with a second, fourth and fifth place efforts to squeak his way into this final round field. So far Brutus hasn't even reached grade A, but he has put up some grade A efforts in the past. This dual distance threat has shown that when he gets in the open, he is a threat to beat anyone ahead of him at the finish line. As the most experienced greyhound in the field with forty starts, he has the veteran side of the equation covered, but as for winning races he has a way to go to catch up with the other finalists. Brutus is from the Crowe Kennel who finds themselves in the third stakes final in a row. They have had success in 2010 too as Eds Budby took home the title in the Orange Park Derby back in February. Like several of the others post position really doesn't matter that much to him, but for a completely different reason. Brutus is slow from the box and can get to wherever he wants to be at the start of the race, but if he gets too choose, how about the 1 box. He has won four of seven career starts from here and has crossed the finish line in the money in all but on occasion. This final will be a big test for him, let's see how he does.

Playing Amy Song - Points (60)
Career Totals (25/9-5-3-0)
Bd F July 2008 Golddust Memory Greys Irish Song
Owned By Sharon L. Williams
Runs for the DQ Williams Kennel
Trained by David Helton
Puppy stakes can be so much fun to watch, because sometimes the lights just come on and you see the greyhound mature right before your eyes. This is what has happened to our point leader in the 2010 JGR Puppy Stakes. Playing Amy Song climbed up to the ranks of the grade A greyhounds in just 7 races, but failed to continue on her winning trips in the majority of her races at the top level. She seemed to have all the talents and skills, but just couldn't get everything right, well at least until the stakes rounds started. Here she remembered how to break and that really has been the difference for her in these rounds. Thru the 4 round of qualifying, Playing Amy Song was the only greyhound to win three times and just missed the sweep as she finished second by a half a length in round two. What makes her oh so dangerous is that she can go to the lead or come from off the pace and take you down before the finish line. She is the first of three greyhounds in the finals for the DQ Williams Kennel in this final round race, and obviously has the best chance to take home a win in a race that they have won twice in the last six years. Post might play a role in how she finishes in this effort. She needs something on the extremes of the racetrack to be effective here. With the rail or the outside, she should be able to get room early to rush up close, and then in the stretch she will use her late speed to challenge for the victory. If she does decide to break and make the front early on, they are going to have a hard time taking her off the lead before the finish line tonight.

Smokin Snoopy - Points (42)
Career Totals (24/8-1-2-3)
Bd M June 2008 Go Joe Jester Smokin Dizzy
Owned By Gary L Scott
Runs for the Stacey Blanch Kennel
Trained by Linda Blanch
Smokin Snoopy was probably not the greyhound that the Blanch Kennel though might make this final round race, but after his efforts in the stakes he is here and might have something to say about who wins it. Snoopy broke in very well, but after reaching the top grade he fell into a funk. He dropped all the way back to grade C. There he decided to start breaking again and that has really changed around how he has been performing. He jumped up to grade A again after back to back wins and has started to show the promise that he did when he was just breaking in. In the rounds he was very consistent with a pair of wins, a fourth, and a fifth place effort. In those victories Snoopy came out in an extreme hurry and took early command on the front end. Once in the daylight no one was going to get to him before the finish line, and no one did. Heading into this race everything is going well for this fine young pup, including his kennel. The Stacey Blanch Kennel has had great success in the stakes races over the last year of so here at the Orange Park Kennel Club, and will have this greyhound ready to rock and roll in this final round race. Now for the post position which really plays just a little role in this effort. Plain and simple, Snoopy needs to break in this effort. He is extra tough on the lead and needs to find a way to get there from whatever post he starts from. Maybe he can get a pep talk from Kennelmate Rs Libby Lu. She has won back to back stakes finals and runs in a very similar style to Snoopy. Just get to the lead, give your all, and good things can happen for you.

Fth Tiger Lilly - Points (44)
Career Totals (34/9-6-4-4)
Bd F June 2008 Take It Over Fth Moon Dancer
Owned By Bill Lambert or Henry T. Howe
Runs for the B & J Racing Kennels, Inc.
Trained by Tom Artzer
Fth Tiger Lilly might be the second of two from the B & J Kennel in this final round race, but she is riding no one's coattails as she gets ready for this effort. She earned her stop with a pair of strong wins in the first two rounds of the competition. She followed that up with a rough 8th place finish, and a rebounded nicely in the semi-finals with a strong 2nd place effort. Breaking and going is the key to her success, just like dear old dad. Take It Over is a name that everyone recognizes and they should, he won this very race back in 2008 as he cruised thru the rounds and topped it off with a victory in the finals for the undefeated run. Big things look ahead for him in the breeding barn as his very first litter has already produced a stakes finals. Lilly cant relive that run thru the stakes, but she can still steal away the win and take home a little family pride in the process. She took is working for some kennel pride as well as she tries to keep the streak going for the B & J Kennel in this race. Post plays a big role for her in this effort too. She is one-hundred times better from the inside post positions and needs to draw something away from the middle boxes. She can go from the outside as well on occasion, but truthfully the break will really determined how she finishes tonight. If she can come out running, she will be the thick of things at the finish line.

Paddy Whacker - Points (48)
Career Totals (32/11-4-5-3)
Bd M July 2008 Heart Rumble* Spicy Candy
Owned By Lisa B. Riches
Runs for the B & J Racing Kennels, Inc.
Trained by Tom Artzer
Paddy Whacker is probably the fastest greyhound in this final round race and in the semi-finals he sent a message to the rest of the field by winning in 30.31 seconds. He crossed thirteen and a half lengths ahead of the rest of the field on a rain soaked racetrack. Who knows what the time would have been on a different day, but I bet it would have been really close to the best trip ever. Paddy ran well in the others rounds too as he was never out of the money winning in round two and finishing third in rounds one and four. Paddy leads the way for the duo in the B & J Kennel and has a lot on the line. Puppy stakes winning is what B & J does and this year they are looking for their third victory in a row in this race. If Paddy wants to continue the trend, he has to get clear early on. This is when he runs his best, but don't be fooled into thinking that he is one dimensional. This greyhound can also come from off the pace to win and has done that in grade A on several occasions in the past. Post always plays a role with this greyhound and even though he can run from a bunch of different posts if he wants to, the OUTSIDE part of the racetrack is his Mecca. If he can draw the 7 or 8 box to start this race from, he is going to be tough to beat in this stakes final.

Mw Sekhnot - Points (37)
Career Totals (12/4-1-3-2)
W R M July 2008 C Ya Costa Maya Mw Steel Jaw
Owned By Mark Williams
Runs for the DQ Williams Kennel
Trained by David Helton
It's true puppy power here with the third entry from the DQ Williams Kennel. Mw Sekhnot had just eight races under his belt before the stakes started and now four races later, he is in the finals against the best puppies at the racetrack. In true DQ fashion this greyhound can't be confused with the La's Silver, this greyhound is a closer and can come from off the pace to get up for the win. Like his kennelmate though, he had one rough trip in his rounds with a seventh place finish in the second trip, but besides that he was rock solid. He won in the third round and finished in the money in the other two with a second and a third place effort. Short of experience, but long on talent, David Helton will have this little guy ready to fire on all cylinders at the start of this effort. With just twelve races to choose from, post position is kind of a mixed bag. He seems to like the middle boxes as two of his four victories have come from here, but the others came from the outside and the rail. You figure it out if you can, but really if he wants to win he has to be close early, so that his late speed can carry him past everyone at the finish line. This is a really big hill for a puppy, but he could be up for the challenge.

Leading Steps - Points (40)
Career Totals (35/8-12-3-4)
W Bd M July 2008 Lonesome Cry Tk Ashira
Owned By Lester Raines
Runs for the Lester Raines Kennel
Trained by Mike Gerard
Leading Steps is an all out early speed machine that can go to the turn with the best of them in any race here at the Orange Park Kennel Club. In the stakes he took his game on the big stage and even though he didn't win a round, he gave some winning efforts in the process. After a missing his break in the 1st round, he rebounded nicely the rest of the way thru the stakes. He was on or near the lead in each of the three efforts and finished runner up at the wire on three straight occasions. Like more speed merchants he is short at the end of his races, but not short enough that he can't hold on at the wire every now and then for the victory. Working in his favor in this final round race are his experience in the rounds and his kennel. Leading Steps had a rough go of it in qualifying and still managed to make the finals. He ran against some tough fields and was the runner up in rounds three and four to the leaders in points in the final round race. Mike Gerard of the Lester Raines Kennel always has his greyhound ready to go in the finals and I know for sure this greyhound is going to come out running when the box opens up in this effort. As for posts, I would something on the rail. He has only started inside of the three box on four occasions, but that includes three wins and a strong second place effort in the stakes. If he gets loose and gets some help behind him, he has a outside shot to take home the win in this effort.

La's Silver - Points (42)
Career Totals (34/11-2-3-4)
R F July 2008 Be Discrete La's Felisha
Owned By Lorenzo Anguiano
Runs for the DQ Williams Kennel
Trained by David Helton
La's Silver stepped up at the right time as he needed a big trip in the semi-finals to make it to the elite 8. Breaking close and driving to early control, he held on for the duration of this race and took home her second victory in the rounds. Those 32 points along with his third and sixth place finishes was good enough for fourth. A couple of interesting observations about the second of three from DQ in the finals. He is an early speed greyhound that is a bit short at the end of the race. You rarely see this from any of the greyhounds in this kennel, but when you can steal a ton early on a consistent basis you are going to win a lot of races. So far almost thirty percent of the time and those are not numbers to laugh at. The other thing that to notice is that Silver's mom is also the mom of multi-stakes finalist La's Anthony. Obviously, there are some good genes being pasted down the lines in this family tree and maybe this greyhound can do what Anthony has failed to win, win a stakes race for her kennel. Post matters not to this dynamic breaker. Getting out of the box, stealing a lead, getting some help behind, and surviving in the stretch are the things that will take her a long way in this race. Getting to the lead might not be the issue here, holding to the wire will be.
