Its time for my favorite stakes race on the year, the 2019 edition of the Iron Hound Stakes. This one doesn’t just take place over one distance, it covers all 4, and the same greyhound has to get the job done over each in order to get a shot at the title. First up is a 660 race, then the next round will run over 330 yards. The semi-finals will run over 550 yards and the top 8 greyhounds in points will advance to the finals and the winner of the 770 leg will be the champion.
Tonight, starts out the stakes so we will look at the 7th and 15th race for Friday evening at bestbet Jacksonville. Both are 660 events, so the recent routers will have the advantage, but you never know…
Saturday evening March 29th, 2019 – Round 1 of Ironhound Stakes
Race 7 – The only solid grade A greyhound over 660 yards in this race is Arkans Speedy. Winning 3 races back at the top level and finished in the money in 3 of his alt6 5 efforts. He is the one to beast, especially if he gets loose early on. The post is ideal, I expect a big effort. Red hot running Baby Stop Crying has gone 660 before and should be ready for the challenge again. Posted well outside, she will get room to rush and run early and should be a strong factor throughout. Late speed belongs to Lk’s Livin Large. This guy can close from anywhere and run down anyone in this race if he ever decides to break. He likes the post and could get loose early, and if he does, this race is over. Just look back 5 starts. Tough to ignore a 10-length win in 37.37. Ww’s Wonderous is short over the distance and will most likely be that way again here. Working for her is the ideal starting post position, she loves the rail, and could force the pace in the early stages of this race. Late she is no match for the rest but could hang on in the money once again at the wire. (4-7-3-1)
Race 15 – This race we take the rising star Pat C Bucko. Winning 3 of his last 6 races, and not missing the trifecta in any of those efforts, he appears the one to beat over 660 in this effort. He can win with, or without, the lead and has gears to burn in the stretch to run down short greyhounds before the wire. He likes it midtrack to inside and just needs room early to secure a win at the wire. Pushing the pace and challenging the leader throughout will be Gs Trixie. Trixie is a good early speed threat over the longer distance that keeps around the leaders in the majority of her efforts. She has been in the cash in 4 of 6 starts and that includes a strong win 6 races back. If she hits the lid, they might not be able to get to her before the finish line. Dc Feisty Faith can run all distance, and if she can make the final, she might be tough to beat. She is best over 770 but hasn’t looked to shabby over 660 as of late. She just missed last time out and has 4 money trips in her last 6 efforts. She is a closer over this distance and will most likely be a threat at the end of this effort. Upset minded, the solid grade A runner Arkans Tt Cash could take them all down if he wants to run. Posted well on the rail, he has a great spot to start from and has flourished from them in the past. With 4 of 6 in the money, he can hang, but he is overdue for the top spot. It could come tonight. (4-5-6-1)
Round 2 runs on Monday evening over the 330-yard course.
