It’s the last chance to earn some points and a spot in the coveted finals of the 2017 $35,000 Orange Park Derby. Just 24 greyhounds remain, 3 races, and there are several that could earn their way into the mix with a big effort in the semi-finals. Let’s take a closer look at the races and see if we can get you cashing some tickets this weekend at bestbet Jacksonville.
Orange Park Derby Semi-finals Saturday evening, November 4th, 2017
Race 7 – This is an interesting race where several greyhounds could make a name for themselves. Everyone in this race has the ability to win the race. All eight contestants have finished either first or second in one of the rounds of the Orange Park Derby this year, so this one could come down to just who wants to win the most. One thing is for sure, I think we know who is going to set the early pace in this effort. Ww’s Jax Straw might have found trouble at the start last time out, but previous to that she had not been beat to the lead in 6 straight efforts. In this one, she is alone outside and there is absolutely no one here that can match her from the starting box. She will be unabated to the lead, but can she hold on and win? That is the true question on the evening. For me, It’s a NO! First round winner Lk’s Fanciful gets an ideal rail starting box and is looking to secure her spot in the finals. She has gears late and should be stalking the leader in the early stages of this effort. All she needs to do is be in the conversation in the first half, and the second half will take care of itself. She will not be alone chasing though as Dutch Dalton should be right alongside of her coming home. Dalton is liking the new distance is not missing a beat as he continues to close in every start. He seems to like the post and just missed last time out from the very same blue blanket. If he gets loose early on, he too could be upset minded at the finish line. Last but certainly not least is Super C Amy. This girl can come home with the best of them late in the race and could circle the whole field and steal away the win at the wire if the mood suits her. She is almost midtrack here, in the 3 box, and could have a surprise waiting for the leaders at the wire. Time to put up or shut up, as she might be saving that best run in the rounds for this semi-final race. (1-2-7-3)
Race 9 – Recent success is the way to describe the 9th race and that is who should continue to shine in this effort. Nizy might just be the surprise of the stakes as this converted router has taken to the route like a fly to honey. She has never finished out of the trifecta, she has won 2 of the 3 races so far, and finds herself tied for the point lead heading into this semi-final round race. She is a great stalking closer that should be close early in a race void of big time early speed factors. Post might be a bit of a deterrent, but not all that important as both of her wins have come from the outside part of the racetrack. Determination late is the key for her winning this effort. This race will not be a runaway though, fellow round 3 winners loom and could take home back to back victories too if things go their way. Lee Banshee finally got out of the box in his last start and that was enough for him to control the race throughout and get the coveted 19 points at the wire. He is a solid grade A racer over 660 yards and can get the job done from on or off the pace. I expect him to break well again, and be a threat throughout in this effort. Another greyhound that has taken well to the added distance is Pat C Typhoon. Blowing up a storm in his last trip, Typhoon hit the lid and never looked back. On the front end, he saw his margin dwindle to the wire, but he held strong late and denied the closers at the line for the victory. He looks to be a bit short over the added distance and that could cost him once again in this effort. He has a great post position though, and with some help behind early on, he too could be in line for yet another win in the rounds. If you are looking for a late driving greyhound to finish off the superfecta, then look no further that the former 770 track record holder, Herstal. Not missing the top 4 spots in all 3 rounds, including a win in round 1, she is late charging factor that no one, even the closers, want to deal with. Clearly, she has the best raw speed in the bunch, i.e. 37.23 as a best time, but she needs to be close early to use that late speed to advantage. If she sits early and waits to the second half to use those afterburners, she will round out the superfecta, and not challenge for the win here. So, tonight, if she wants to make it into the final round field, she must get out of the box in a hurry. Just like she did in round 1, from this very same post position. (8-3-4-1)
Race 11 – Saving the best for last, the 11th race could be titled, BATTLE ROYAL! All kinds of talent in this race as we get 4 greyhounds that have won a round, or two, along with three other greyhounds that has not missed the money in any of their races during the stakes. Topping the pack is a greyhound that has already won a distance stakes this year. Boc’s Queen Lady was the winner of the 2017 Ironhound Stakes and has already won a pair of races in the rounds. She can break on occasion, but like most of her efforts over any distance, she come from off the pace to win. Good news for her, but bad news for the greyhound that is looking to steal a lead and hold on late to score. Gs Humongous has shown some great early speed since converting to the longer distance, but the quarter-finals was the first time that he held on late for a victory. It also happened to be his best time to date, and maybe he is just now figuring it all out over the longer course. It’s not like he has been running bad, he has been in the money in 5 straight trips, he is just a bit short late and has been surrendering at the finish line. Tonight, it should be more of the same. Hitting the lid, leading the way to the stretch, and getting outfinished for the win. Another greyhound to consider is Businessasusual. Starting off the stakes he might not have been a name to think about, but with 3, count them, 3 second place finishes in a row, he must be considered a factor once again in this effort. He has thrived from those inside posts and gets another on here in this effort. Even though he possesses a little bit of late speed, he will need to break close to keep up the in the money streak in this race. Don’t forget about Dutch Casey from the rail either. This greyhound has not missed the money in any of her last 6 races, and that includes three trips against the best at the racetrack. This post might be a problem, as he wants to be midtrack, but he might find room as he doesn’t start to close until the second half of the race. He will need a victory to have a shot at the finals, so let’s see just what he can muster up in this effort. (4-5-3-1)
