The 2017 edition of the Thanksgiving Marathon Challenge took place on Friday evening November 24th at bestbet Jacksonville. The place was packed to see the best 770-yard greyhounds compete as they took their chances in our second chance drawings for cash in the nightcap of our special holiday double header. As the board popped up for the 11th race on the card, you knew it was going to be an interesting race to say the least. No one, not until almost post time, was double digits for the win. Everyone was close to the same odds as the wagering public didn’t know just who was going to come out on top in this effort. At the wire, that point was etched in stone.
Around the frontstretch and through the turn in front of the marathon box Rusty rumbled, and the break in this stakes final there was one greyhound that came to run. Hitting the lid from the 4 box, Royal Clarion exploded to the lead and stole away 3 quick lengths on the rest of the field as they bolted down the backside. Also rushing well was former stakes winner Boc’s Queen Lady on the rail followed by Dutch Dalton, Jesse Owens, and Dutch Casey. Around the turn for the turn time Clarion continued to hold that lead against the pressing Boc’s Queen Lady as the rest of the field tried to make up ground on the leaders. Around the turn, and up the frontside the race remained the same, except that Boc’s Queen Lady was narrowing the gap as they crossed the finish line the first time around. Through the escape turn and down the backside they ran. Royal Clarion still in control, Boc’s Queen Lady still pressing the leader, and the rest of the field was starting to warm up as well. By the far turn, the tide of the race looked to be turning a bit, as the closers started to come a running at the leaders, but Clarion still appeared strong on the front end. Turning for home Clarion was digging in deep as Boc’s Queen Lady was losing steam and the late threats were making their presence known. Clarion didn’t miss a beat over the final few strides. Turning back the challengers with every strong stride she took, she wired the field and took home the CROWN at the finish line by a length and a half in 44.06 seconds. The real race here was for place. It was a three-way battle coming home and a photo would be needed to separate the chasers at the finish line. Dutch Casey blew on by the tiring Boc’s Queen Lady and appeared to have a shot at the win coming home, but try as he might he just couldn’t catch up the leader before the finish line. In fact, he almost got caught peaking for the wire too soon as Jesse Owens made a huge late rush to just miss out for place and had to settle for show at the wire. The all out early pace pusher, Boc’s Queen Lady was outgamed in the stretch, but held on for the final spot in the superfecta just off from the winners at the finish line. Completing the field was Dutch Dalton in 5th, Super C Amy in 6th, Jack’s Jet Speed in 7th and Pj Wigglengiggle in 8th.
