Saturday evening January 28, 2017
Semi-Finals of $20,000 bestbet Derby
Race 7 – Here you must go with the 2 out of 3 race winner in the rounds, Easi Ted. Ted is the only greyhound in the field that has a stake win over this distance to his credit. He was the man in the finals of the 660 Holiday Stakes, and looks to put up another strong run in this effort. Last time out from the 4 box, a win by almost 5 in a speedy 37.11 clocking. No doubt late that the 770-track record holder, and fellow round winner, Herstal will throw her hat into the ring. Clearly, she will not be around early on, but late you know she will be doing to best to win as she needs all the points she can get in order to have a shot at moving on to the finals. Others to watch in this race include the duo from Pat Collins. Pat C Dashboard is finally back inside and that could see him rebound with a big effort in this race. If Pat C Funkie keeps breaking, he too might have an outside shot at the top spot at the wire. Both have the skills to take down the rest, they just need to find their mojo and get to work in this one. (4-5-2-6)
Race 11 – Another tough event here as the early meets the late speed in a classic showdown at the finish line. No doubt in my mind that the inside part of the racetrack in going to be crowded early on in this effort. Three good early speeders lurk there and anyone of them could come out with the lead at the start of this effort. The only problem is that the best greyhound in the race, and the eventual winner, is a closer. Barts Risingstar has won 2 of 3 rounds and was the runner-up in the recent $50,000 Orange Park Derby. This greyhound can come on with the best of them late and can be close enough early to allow no lead to be safe. Expect for him to flourish tonight from a good starting box. Pushing the pace should be round 1 winner Pj Just Cruisin, but late she will be no match for the rest. She will be joined by the hot off a win runner Lee Trinity, from the best box at the racetrack, and the always in the money runner, well 6 straight in the trifecta that is, Pat C Merlin. If any of this trio can steal enough early, and get some help behind, they might just be able to pull off the upset tonight. (5-1-3-2)
Race 15 – Capping off the evening card, we get the most competitive race of the evening. Two greyhound here have won two rounds, and if that wasn’t enough, three others have yet to miss the ticket during qualifying. Clearly the race will be between pre-race favorite to win, Lk’s Centuria, and the only getting better with every start runner Omega Point. Both greyhounds have the skill set to win, but you must pick a winner. Here I go with Centuria. This greyhound is a monster on the front end and against a field or so breakers, she will see the early lead. That is all she needs to take down the rest and post up her 6th win in her last 7 starts. Look for a box to wire masterpiece in the semis. She won’t be all alone up front though. Pushing her the entire way will be the back to back round winner Omega Point. This greyhound gets his best box, the one, to break from and could come out flying early too if the mood suits him. He has the luxury of sitting a bit and still being able to challenge late. He will factor from start to finish and could just outnose Centuria for the upset. Both greyhounds will be stalked from Tempo Rock. Never getting enough credit, Rock is a consistent threat that just can’t buy a win. Finishing a close second in 3 straight trips, he has been in the thick of it, but he needs to get over the hump here if he wants a chance at the finals. A good post and a big break will go a long away for him tonight. Huge closer Aintgunnawasteithas not missed the trifecta in 3 trips in the stakes, and that includes a big win in round number 2. The most is fine and he can get in smelling distance at the start, he could be a big piece of the pie in the deep stretch. Winning might be a stretch, but he should be a good under play on your tickets tonight. (4-1-3-7)
