Saturday evening June 4th was a good one at bestbet Jacksonville. Not only did we have the running of the 2016 bestbet Puppy Stakes, we kicked off our Greyhound Summer promotion with loads of cash and prize giveaway, along with drink and food specials, and a DJ on the apron. Everyone was here and having a good time, but the focus shifted to the stakes race as it approached in race 11, and people were looking to cash tickets and take come money. This race was a wide open affair. Normally there is a clear cut favorite, especially in puppy races, but not this time around. Seven of the eight greyhounds in the field won 2 of the qualifying rounds and several had a stand out performance in one of those victories. Tonight was going to come down to who wanted to win.
As the lure rumbled through the far turn, you could hear the excitement in the bigger than normal crowd outside on the apron. Just a few more feet and pop went the box and we were off and running in the finals of the 2016 bestbet Puppy Stakes. Taking right to the lead was the solid grade A experienced ankle burner Js Great Escape. He was joined on the rail with Be Limitless, Ww’s Holy Grail, and Ww Standardissue in the first few strides, but it was the rush leading up to the turn that would determine the outcome of this effort. Great Escape pushed on the pace passed the finish line the first time around as the outside part of the racetrack found room to the inside and really started to challenge. Be Limitless and Ww’s Holy Grail crowded up with each other and gave the others a chance to get back into contention. As Ww Standardissue moved to the inside, stakes veteran Pat C Outbounds found a lane to rush in and found another gear as she made up ground on the leaders on the way to the turn. At the first turn is where the leaders separated themselves from the rest of the crowd. Js Great Escape was easily in front by 2 lengths over the rushing Pat C Outbounds with Ww Standardissue stalking on the rail. Trying to make room on the rail, Be Limitless bumped into Ww’s Holy Grail and Rams Big Dan T at the turn and allowed the leaders to increase their margin over the rest of the field. Js Great Escape shutoff Ww Standardissue and as they rounded the ben and it was clear from that point on that it was turning into a two greyhound race. Down the backside Js Great Escape pushed the pace on the lead and held strong as Pat C Outbounds tried to chase down the leader before time ran out. By the far turn the margin had shrunk down to a length as Outbounds was getting the better of the front running Js Great Escape. As they turned for home, this due was heads apart and everyone knew that it was going to be an exciting finish. Js Great Escape drifted out wide as they came home, and that was the opportunity than Pat C Outbounds needed. Putting her head down and digging in deep, she eased by the leader in the final few strides to steal away the win, the title, and the crown. Crossing 2 lengths better than the rest in a speed 30.48 trip, the previous stakes runner-up was a bridesmaid no more. Kudos to Js Great Escape as she gave her all in each step she took around the racetrack, but came up just short at the end in this effort. Finishing third was the fast closing Pat C Dashboard as Ww Standardissue rallied from trouble in the turns to complete the superfecta. Rounding out the race was Pat C Funkie in 5th, Rams Big Dan T in 6th, Be Limitless in 7th, and Ww’s Holy Grail in last.
Congratulations to the Pat Collins Kennel, owner Patrick Collins, Trainer Scott Jarvis, and everyone else connected with this wonderful greyhound. At just over two years old, this pup and many more starts and accolades ahead of her. With a dual threat running style, she is going to win many more races at bestbet Jacksonville before she hangs up her track shoes. Here’s too good luck in the future, and remember the name, Pat C Outbounds, as I have a feeling that this is not the last time you will hear it mentioned.
