All you have to do is look at the results, and then there will be no doubt that the Pat Collins Kennel dominated round 2 of the bestbet Puppy Stakes. Winning 4 of the 8 qualifying races on the card, including the best trip of the evening, they were on fire on Friday night. Clear Lake Racing was the next closest thing as they have the only undefeated greyhound left in the competition. The rest of the races were won by different kennels.
Speaking of that best trip, that came in the last stakes event on the card in the 12th race. There Pat C Outbounds took advantage of the open room ahead of her from the 8 box, as the rest of the field went to the rail, as she rushed to the early lead and left the field in her wake. Sure there was trouble behind her at the first turn, but it really didn’t matter. She was going to win, and win big, anyways. She increased her lead throughout and crossed almost 10 lengths better than the rest in 30.42 seconds.
The next best effort for Pat Collins came in the 7th race as Pat C Dashboard gave a similar effort from the same 8 box that Outbounds had. Outrushing all to the front end, Dashboard stole away a couple of lengths on the rest of the field early on. Coasting down the backside and through the far turn, he was never really challenged and breezed all the way to the wire for the easy win in 30.59 seconds, 2 lengths better than the rest.
The Collins winning trend continued in the 10th race as Pat C Zip Code did a number on the field she was running against. Breaking on top from the 1 box, she seized quick command of the race and would never relinquish control. By the first turn she was almost 3 lengths up on the rest and that number increased all the way to the wire. By the far turn she was all alone in the lead and maintained her 4 length margin all the way down the stretch to the finish line. Crossing in 30.91 seconds, she easily dominated the field in a stunning box to wire effort.
The other victory for the Collins kennel came in the 9th race, and although it was the slowest time, it might have been the most impressive of the wins. Pat C Funkie didn’t break well, didn’t get early control, but didn’t give up either. He had to work just to get up into contention at the turn, 3rd place, but that was not where he was going to finish. Down the backside the field lifted off the rail and he found daylight ahead of him. Putting his head down and driving hard, he made up ground and was staking the leader by the far turn. There he ran up the backside of the one in front, and was offstrided back to third. Not giving up, he came again at the frontrunners and picked each and every one of them up before the finish line. Winning by 2 lengths, this effort was special, even if the time was a slower 31.20 seconds.
Js Great Escape is the only surviving undefeated greyhound in the stakes and the Clear Lake kennel is grateful of that. Her strong early rushing style has served her well at bestbet Jacksonville, and it did again in round 2 of the stakes. Blowing by everyone on the way to the turn, she took over command, left some trouble behind her, and raced off down the backside 3 lengths clear of the rest. She pushed the pace to the far turn and turned for home in complete control of the race. She was getting challenged late, but she put her head back down and dug in deep in the final few strides as she refused to surrender as she won by 2 lengths, crossing the line in 30.83 seconds.
Be Limitless started off the card right fo9r the Double J Kennel with a strong front running effort. This girl took over early on, and pushed her small lead at the first turn, to a large lead by the far turn. There she was 6 lengths clear of the rest and was in total control of this race. Down the homestretch she gave up a couple of lengths to the closer in second, but she was never in doubt of winning. Crossing in 31.04 seconds she was just 4 lengths better than anyone else on this occasion.
The final two races were won in similar fashion as Ww’s Holy Grail in the 2nd and Lee Utah in the 4th both dashed off to big leads, saw those leads diminish as the race went on, but still managed to hold on at the wire to secure the win. One by a nose, in the 2nd, and one by a head, in the 4th, but a win, is a win, is a win, no matter how many lengths it is by.
For the third round the field will be cut in half and just 32 greyhounds will have a chance to move on in the stakes. Join us on Monday evening for the quarter-finals of the 2016 bestbet Puppy Stakes.
