The month of March saw a different type of stakes event here at bestbet Jacksonville, and it went over as a new fan favorite. Basically a bracket challenge, the kennels were seeded with by win percentage at the start of March and then they faced off against their rivals. With 14 kennels on our roster, the top two seeds received byes, and moved straight on to the next round. Others scored more points than their rivals and moved on in the competition. On Saturday April 2nd the final four had been selected and it was time for the last match up. Two greyhounds from four kennels, DQ Williams, Lester Raines, Pat Collins, and J & J Callabro, took to post and whomever scored the most points with their pair would be the winners.
What a tough field of greyhounds we had in the 11th race on Saturday evening April 2nd. Just count them out. A recent All-American, a former grade AA from Southland, a stakes winner at bestbet, a couple of stakes finalists, and some other top notch grade A talent. Only one greyhound could win, and only one pair could score enough points to take home the cash and crown in the finals of the 2016 March Mayhem Kennel Championship.
As the lure squeaked through the far turn and rounded the bend, the box popped open and the race was on for the win. Coming out best was Need My Moneynow. Sure he was neck to neck with some greyhounds on the rail early, but being in the six, he was away from the traffic, as he clearly outbroke those around him, and he was clean sailing to the front end in the first few strides. Once in front he was not going to make it easy for the rest of this field. By the turn he has already stole a couple of lengths on the rest of the field and it appeared that he was going to be very hard to beat in this effort. Staking up the claim behind him was early speeder Pat C Zip Code and Jack’s Won Love, but this race was far from over and the closers had yet to get their engines revved up. Down the backside Moneynow went and he was unfazed by what was occurring behind him. At the far turn he was still just over 2 lengths better than the rest, but the line up behind him had started to change. Pat C Zip Code was still in second, but Pat C Outbounds and Real Good Feelin had started to make a move, along with the slow breaking Charlie Bale. Down the stretch they went and it was now apparent that no one was going to get to Need My Moneynow before the wire. Loping all the way home, the real race turned into one for place. Super pup, Pat C Outbounds, found her best stride late and circled her kennelmate to steal away place in the final few strides. Pat C Zip Code held on to show as Charlie Bale gave everything he had in the stretch to get up in time for the final spot in the superfecta.
Now for the climatic part of this whole stakes race, the point totals. As some of you are aware, we changed them this year to put more of an emphasis in wins and that is what changed the outcome of this final round race. DQ Williams Scored 19 points for their win, but Pat Collins finished 2nd and 3rd and racked up 12 plus 9 points and put their total at 21. It would all come down to where Real Good Feelin finished, and that was outside of the money spots. Would she get enough to score the win for her team. The answer was that she did just enough, to her credit she was going to finish higher probably, but did encounter trouble in the far turn and was shuffled back a bit, still she finished 5th and that was good enough for 3 points. Add those 3 to 19 and you get 22, one more that needed to take home the win.
With this victory, the DQ Williams Kennel, just put another notch in their already lengthy belt of stakes champions here at bestbet Jacksonville. This was their first since returning to track in January, but I have a feeling that it won’t be their lasts as they are several opportunities left in the year to add more titles to their records.
Congratulations head out to trainer Christina Chambers, Sharon Williams, the DQ Williams Kennel, and everyone else connected with these fine greyhounds. Nice to have you back in the fold her at bestbet Jacksonville, and here’s to continued success in the near future.
