The third round of the 2016 $50,000 James J Patton Stakes is in the books and it could be categorized as the longshot winners have arrived. No greyhounds remain undefeated and in 3 of the 4 rounds we had double digit to one winners. Talk about stepping up, these greyhound gave their all to defeat the favorites, but one even money shot did prevail, and that one, from the Lester Raines Kennel, put up the race of the night!
Breaking on top in the 12th race, Se’s Real Deal lived up to her name with every step she took around the oval. Rushing hard to the lead in the first turn, she was 2 lengths clear of the rest as they headed up the backside. Buy the far turn she was still in command, but Real Good Feelin was going to work hard and make it interesting before the wire. Gaining with every step she took toward the wire, Real Good Feelin was flying late, but try as she might, she just couldn’t get to the leader before the wire. Se’s Real Deal ran a huge determined effort on the lead and posted up a fantastic time in 30.22 seconds in the win. Real Good Feelin ran a winning effort, even though she finished 2nd, and posted up a very speedy 30.30 clocking of her own in the process. Rounding out the money spots was the chasing overtaken stakes winner Pullanallnighter in 3rd, and the steady runner Hey Hey Daddy in 4th.
The second biggest trip came from Ww’s Block Off in the 10th race. False starting the field early on, he was in control from the get go and rushed up the frontstretch ahead of all of the chasers. By the turn he had already stolen a slim lead on the rest, and the further he went around the racetrack, the further he got away from the competition. By the far turn he had stretched the lead to almost 4 lengths, but the race was not over just yet. Pat C Outbounds was flying in the far turn, and as they turned for home, Outbounds turned up the heat even more. Closing fast on the leader, as Block Off tried to get to the wire, Outbounds gained as they got closer and closer to the finish line. In the end though, Block Off’s early margin was just too much to overcome and held on late for the strong 30.42 victory. Outbounds was a close second, followed by the even running Atascocita Pirro and Ww’s Lost Girl.
Upset time in the 11th race as the closing Ddm’s Black Hole did something that no one else has done in the last 8 races, she beat Pippi. Breaking like she normally does, Pippi was easily in front headed to the turn and was in control of the race as they headed up the backside. She was not far from the rest though as Ww’s Sammy was hot on her heels along with Ddm’s Black Hole who was lurking on the rail just a couple of lengths back. By the far turn Sammy had taken position and tried to pass, only to be shut down by Pippi as she moved back to the rail. Ddm’s Black Hole Swung out around the leaders and moved up within striking distance as this trio turned up the frontside and started their run for the wire. As they bolted up the stretch, Pippi was clinging to her slim lead as Ww’s Sammy was giving her all on the rail and Black Hole was closing fast. In the final few strides, Black Hole had, had, enough and put the hammer down. Splitting the rivals at the wire she poked her head by and secured the photo win by a nose. Pippi yielded and settled for place as Ww’s Sammy race a huge effort, but only was able to finished a length off in third. Jack’s Won Love was a steady threat in 4th.
The last winner in round 3 was the biggest upset of all, and it came in the 7th race on the card. No doubt the money was on Need My Moneynow in this effort, but someone forgot to tell him to break. Here he sat in the box and looked out of the race early on. Lucky for him the 8 went inside and gave him a lane to rush in. But the turn he was right back in contention and just slipped by the pile up that occurred behind him. Down the backside he took his 2 length lead in tow, but the closers, Ln Houdini and Sheezsohot, were both lurking in the rear view mirror. Coasting on the front end, Moneynow maintained his lead and looked like he was going to win yet another round in the stakes, but not so fast my friend. Ln Houdini had other plans for the leader and decided to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the stretch. Closing and gaining with every step, used all of his Magic that he had left in him and found a way to drive by the leader at the wire and take home a win in a tight photo finish. Moneynow really got lucky to avoid all the trouble after sitting in the box, and still ran a race winning effort, even though he had to settle for second. Sheezsohot was a game threat throughout after trouble in 3rd and the stakes veteran O Ya Gunsmoke battled back late after trouble early to secure a spot in the superfecta.
