Time for the second round of the $50,000 James J Patton Silver Cup, and all 8 fields of greyhounds will return with a shot to score some points and move on to the quarter-finals. With several first round winners drawing in together in round 2, we will have the points spread out all over the place. So each effort will be especially important for each of these greyhounds. DQ dominated round 1, winning 4 of 8 races, can they do it again? Can some of the runner-ups surge in round 2 and take home the top spot? And who will be the longshot winner in this round of action? All these questions will be answered on Friday evening.
Round 2 of the $50,000 James J Patton Silver Cup
Friday Evening February 26th, 2016 –
Race 2 – Tough to pick against a greyhound that has won 7 races in a row, and 9 of 11, so we won’t, but this will not be a calk walk for Pippi tonight. Granted she has the best early speed of anyone in this race and should see the front end easily, but the holding on late part if going to come into question in this race. You see veteran Stakes Threat O Ya Gunsmoke is posted well outside and he is not going to just roll over and let her take home a win. Over 550 he is a closer and can come from off the pace. In the 1st round he might have finished 2nd, but it was really a winning trip and he never gave up. With another strong post position, this race might just come down to a photo to see who wins. Others to think about include the former stakes winner Atascocita Pirro from a good outside post and the all rail all the time runner Rtr Rocket Man from a sparkling red blanket. (2-6-7-1)
Race 4 – Hey Hey Daddy was the only DQ entry not to win in round 1, so tonight she will be on a mission to try and get a W of her own. She is posted well near midtrack in this effort and hopes to come out of the starting box a tad bit better than she did in round 1. She has some late speed and should be able to make up some ground on the leaders late if she doesn’t get to the front end before the stretch. This is all about her and if she wants to win. Looking for redemption, she needs to be in the conversation early on. Closers would be a good way to describe all of this race. No real big time early speeder, so let’s take the hot hand to contend. Ddm’s Black Hole ran a huge race in round 1 to just miss Pippi at the wire. Posted well outside, she too has a shot at the win again tonight. Pat C Rig always was a close runner up in round 1 and make up ground by leaps and bounds in the stretch. With the same post, expect another big trip, and don’t forget about Hilco Spartan. This greyhound was winning A’s for fun last month and might just be the only early footer in the field. If he finds his mojo, he might just upset them all tonight. (3-8-6-5)
Race 7 – Well since we are speaking of breaking, that is just what you will get in this trip. Breaker supreme Cj’s Colin forgot to come out running in round 1 and will certainly make up for it in this effort. This Sprint stakes winner has the best early foot in the field and will see the lead early on in this race. No big closers around to steak away the W in the stretch, so I expect him to fire out and go box to wire for the big time W in this effort. Pushing the pace will be the other early speeder, Gs Flipper. Flipper likes the inside and gets a great post here with the 2 box. If she can get her nose in front early on, she has a good shot wire the field on the lead again tonight. Keep a close eye on Pat C Bomber in this one as well. This stalking closer is tough if he can be around the leaders in the early stages of the race. That is just what he did in round number one and could do it again in this effort. Ww Unruly Pearl could be a factor as well, but the post might hinder her effort in this race. Like Bomber, she will need to be around the leaders early if she wants a chance to score in this one. (6-2-4-7)
Race 9 – Only one winner in round one here, so let’s jump on the bandwagon and see if we can’t get another win out of Jack’s Won Love. Love has been a mainstay in grade A since arriving and showed that he can actually win a race here when it counts. Breaking extremely well last time, he will need a similar early effort here if he wants to beat this talented field. Pushing the leader all the way around the racetrack will be the puppy stakes winner Pat C More Ever. This greyhound is an in the money machine, but winning has eluded him for quite a while. Tonight he is posted ok and should be doing what he always does around the racetrack. STALKING! Look for another strong in the money effort out of him here. Looking to improve on their first round numbers will be Gs Charming and Beachin. Both greyhounds are solid A competitors that can win if the chips fall their way early on. Both are posted well, 1 and 8 boxes, and either could surprise this field if they decide that they want to go. Charming will need to be close early, while Beachin can get it done from off the pace. Both should be a good play in the money on your tickets tonight. (4-6-1-8)
Race 10 – This one features the unbeaten ALL-American, Seldom Told. This greyhound’s legend grows with every start, but he really had to work last time out to keep the streak alive. O Ya Gunsmoke ran a huge race, but in the end Seldom Told was just a smidge better. Tonight he will be challenged again as there are several in this race that will be gunning to spot the win streak. Obviously he will not be in the lead early on in this effort, that should be saved for Nb’s Copperhead or Ww’s Lost Girl, and late he will have closing competition from the multi-talented Windy Gabby, but in the end he will find a way to get the job done from a great starting box. The last two times he has been on the rail, he won by 13 and 11 lengths. After the first round race NB’s Copperhead should be the one to run down. He stole a huge lead on the field only to surrender late, and I expect for it to happen again here. Ww’s Lost Girl has almost as much early speed and enough staying power to overtake the leader late, but She too can get caught and will if Told is close coming home. Windy Gabby also should be considered a threat as she race a monster race in round one to just miss winning at the wire. She was closing, and gaining on, Need My Moneynow in the stretch and was only a length off of the win at the wire. If she can break close, she too will be in the mix at the finish line. (2-8-3-5)
Race 11 – Post up and ready to go, It’s Time for All-American and Daytona 550 winner to show what he is all about. This early speeder came from well off the pace as he overcame trouble in the first turn to win in round 1 and tonight he will have his hands full once again. Three other first round winners are in this field and that includes the fastest of the fast runner Se’s Real Deal. Post might be the thing that gives him the edge in this race. he loves it outside and breaks well from this starting box, just look back 2 races to see what I mean, and even if he gets to the lead unscathed, he will have to work to win this effort. Se’s Real Deal lived up to her name in round 1 and dominated the field in a personal best 30.27 romp. She draws right next door to Need My Moneynow and these too could be locked in a donnybroke battle from the get go. Both greyhounds have the speed to separate from the rest of this field and if they do both come to run, this could be an instant classic match-up. If she beats Money to the lead, she could be the one that takes home back to back wins in this effort. The others two winners that must be contended with are the back to back winner Ln Houdini and Js Grate Escape. Both greyhound ran huge races on the lead and will need strong breaks once again if they want a chance to contend with the power couple on the outside in this effort. No doubt they are talented, but neither posses the all out raw speed of the others in the open air. Winning will be tough, but finding the money could be the reasonable tonight. (8-7-4-2)
Race 13 – A wide open affair here in round 2 as all 8 greyhounds did not win in round 1 and only 3 of the 8 finished in the money. So we all know there can be bad trips, and each greyhound is looking to make amends in this effort. After looking at the field there is no doubt as to who I think is going to win this race. Ww’s Sammy! Why? There is no early speed in this race, and even though she is not as consistent as some coming out of the box fast, she will on this occasion. I see no way that she doesn’t make the front end. Once there she will be tough to catch, and besides she is the only former stakes finalist running in this one. Class and speed over the rest for the win. Pushing the leader will be the runner-up in round 1 J Cal’s Woozle. Post is the only thing that might get in the way of this greyhound having another strong run around the oval. He loves the rail and their might be traffic getting inside early on tonight. If he can clear, he too has a shot at the win, and should be considered a strong threat in this effort. Don’t sleep on the puppy closer Lee Shep either. A late driving 4th in round one, gave him some confidence and he could improve of those numbers here, and from a better midtrack post, C Ville Wiseman could come flying up late to steal away the final spot in the super at the wire tonight. (3-8-1-5)
Race 15 – Another strong field of greyhounds locking up in this effort and it looks like another win for the DQ Kennel for me. Real Good Feelin is a strong closer that can get close early on and should again tonight from another advantageous starting box. She is near midtrack and that is all she needs to be to have a shot at the W here. She will have to come from off the pace to get the job done though, and if there is trouble, she might not catch Kc’s Todd tonight. Todd ran a huge race from a tough 4 box and lead all the way to the stretch before he was denied by Real Good Feelin in round 1. This pup gets his best box, the 1, in this effort and I expect for him to fire out fast again and give his all for as long as he can. He will be short again late, like he has been in the past, but he will factor from start to finish. If there is trouble behind early, he has a shot to wire this field on the front end. Sunkist N Salty likes it outside and won the 550 edition of the Holiday Stakes from a similar post position. Rested and ready to go, Salty just missed winning last time out and could try and make up for it in this effort. She has good closing speed might be able to run down the leader late as well to take home the win. Don’t count her out in this effort. Pat C Outbounds rounds out the superfecta in the selections. This pup out of JGR star, Pat C Valdes, has took the racetrack by storm and has finished in the money in 12 of his 20 races at the track. With a good outside post and her stalking style of running, expect to see her in the money in back to back stakes efforts tonight. (3-1-8-7)
