The riches sprint race of the year is upon us. The 2016 edition of the $50,000 James J Patton Silver Cup will get underway tonight, Monday February 22nd, with 8 full fields of greyhounds ready to compete for the title, the cash, and the crown at bestbet Jacksonville. Loads of talent is on tap, and we have a little something for everyone. We have great early speeders who will try and steal away the win on the lead. We have some great closers that will try and get up late and take home the W at the wire, and we even have a couple of greyhound that have 6 race win streaks currently at bestbet Jacksonville. Let’s take a closer look at the races, and as with most stakes events, we will try and exploit the match-ups in the first round of racing. It only gets tougher from here, so let’s get you cashing some tickets tonight.
Round 1 of 2016 $50,000 James J Patton Silver Cup
Monday Evening –
Race 2 – Speed and class is the key to the leaders in this first round race. Ww’s Lost Girl is the best breaker in this race and has been firing out of the box recently. She has won 5 of her last 6 races and comes into this one with a W in her last effort. Front running for the win, but she will be pressed early and late in this effort. Jack’s Won Love is right next door and is a solid grade A chaser that loves 2nd place. How about 4 in a row? Yep that’s him, but he too will have to work to keep that spot. Stakes veteran Atascocita Pirro is posted well outside and could upset them both if the planets are aligned in this start, and don’t sleep on Arkaska Saab. Like the car, she is a forgotten about player in this race, but with back to back wins from this 8 box, she must get a closer look tonight. (4-3-7-8)
Race 4 – Rested and ready to go, Sunkist N Salty is poised to start making a lot of noise in the stakes. This closer can run either distance and is not out of any race. She never gives up or gives in and the midtrack post is just where she wants to be in this effort. She might have to run down someone late if she sits early tonight, so it all comes down to how bad she wants to score in this effort. She will have her hands full here though as three other solid grade A players will be wanting those 19 points too. Hilco Spartan has the early speed needed to wire the field on the front end, but if he wants to do that, he needs to find that break. Ww Unruly Pearl loves the inside and gets a great post here in the 1 box. She too needs to break well in order to contend, and let’s not forget about Gs Charming. Charming is a solid chaser that is always around the money. Winning might be tough for him, but he should be a good place under on your tickets. (6-4-1-3)
Race 7 – It’s half pass four and Real Good Feelin will be shifting gears in the stretch to take down this field. The best greyhound in the third litter from Need A Date, this router is looking to prove that she can go the shorter distance as well. She has won 4 of her last 6 starts and has come from off the pace in all 4 of them to take the win. Tonight she will have to do it again as the lead should be saved for Kc’s Todd. This surprising puppy has been running especially well as of late and has scores in 2 of his last 5 starts and has been in the money non 4 of those occasions. He is short in the stretch though and it will cost him dearly again in this effort. No way you can leave puppy stakes winner, Pat C More Ever, out of the trifecta as he has finished there in 12 of his 14 starts on the year, and J Cal’s Woozle could be a threat as well from the rail. That is if the solid grade A decides to get out of the box from a good inside post. (5-7-4-2)
Race 9 – No doubt who the play is in this race. The All-American, and Daytona 550 race winner, Need My Moneynow. Over his last couple of races, he has started to get his timing down and has been firing out close and outrushing everyone to the lead. Once in front, this greyhound is a running machine, and tonight I see the win streak stretching to 3 races in a row. He will not be alone though as other here could factor early and late if he doesn’t make the lead from this 4 box. The rested Windy Gabby draws a great post position outside and she will use her late speed to find a way into the mix at the end of this race. Since returning to live racing she has closed well and has not missed the trifecta. Stakes veteran Gs Flipper has good early speed and a good starting box and could be a factor in the early stages, and Ww Lucky Clover is a well posted solid grade A that has not missed the top four positions in her last 4 races in a row. (4-8-2-1)
Race 10 – What more do you say then Seldom Told? This All-American greyhound has not lost a race so far at bestbet Jacksonville and I really don’t know if there is any one here, including Need My Moneynow, that can beat him. Currently he has won 6 straight, 7 in total, and he has done it from the lead and from off the pace. He is unstoppable in the second half of the race and he has flirted with the track record on slow tracks on a couple of different occasions. If there is a lock in the 1st round, he is it. Oh and did I mention it is the first half of the forced out Twin-Trifecta? The best of the rest here will be stakes veteran O Ya Gunsmoke. In another race he would probably be the winner, but here he has to settle for 2nd fiddle at the wire. This cagey stakes vet and has finished 2nd in the finals in races over 550 and 660 yards. Look for a big effort, but just placing in this one. Others to consider include the good closer, and solid grade A, Beachin from the outside and the rail running ankle burner Mrl Igotnosixes from the red box. Don’t be surprised if sixes makes the early lead, but there is just too much firepower behind her for her to hold on for the upset here. (8 with 5-7-1)
Race 11 – The last sprint stakes winner, Cj’s Colin gets some love to start off this stakes event. Posted well in the 2 box, this early speed runner should be able to see the front end in this effort. He has looked sharp since returning to live racing and was a gallant second to Seldom Told in his last start. He will have to work hard to get the win here though as the talented Se’s Real Deal is right next door and ready to take home a win herself. Deal has scored in 3 of her last 6 efforts and she has been in the quiniela in 5 of those 6 trips. Her last race was a mess and she is looking to rebound tonight from the same post position. Getting out of the box well could make her a winner tonight. Ww’s Cecilia has a lot going for her as well in this effort. She loves the rail, and gets it in the 1 box, she can break well, and should follow Colin to the turn, and she might just have the best raw speed in the bunch if she can get loose. Upset minded here, she could take down the big names if she gets out well. Don’t forget the point leader and 3rd place finisher in the 2016 bestbet Derby. Mercury Morris might be more suited for the route, but this tremendous closer will never be out of any race over 550. This outside post makes him a threat and if he can break just a bit better, he could put a scare into the leaders at the finish line. (2-3-1-7)
Race 13 – Another DQ product to take notice of is Hey Hey Daddy. Yet another greyhound out of Need A Date, who raced here by the way, is tearing up the bestbet oval. With back to back wins, and 3 in her last 6 trips, she is a force to be reckoned with that is just starting to figure things out at the new racetrack. She has only missed the money once in 9 starts, and has drawn a great post to start from here. She will be tough to beat. The greyhound with the best shot to get it done might just be the pure puppy Lee Shep. This greyhound has loads of bottom and can run down a lot of greyhounds here at the racetrack. Not to be outdone, she has won 3 races in a row, but this one will be her first against the best at the racetrack. From a great box, she needs to get around closer early if she wants a chance to continue the streak in this effort. Others to think about here include the solid grade A’s Pat C Rig and Rovers Sky. Rig has not won in a while, but has been a factor at the wire in 5 of his last 6 starts. Sky is a hot and cold running greyhound that has skills, but you never know when you are going to see them. Like most puppies, she is just trying to get a handle on this whole racing thing and will get better with more experience. From a good near rail post, she too has a shot at taking home a W here. (7-8-6-3)
Race 15 – Capping off the evening we the other 6 race win streaker, Pippi! This greyhound was not really all that much at Gulf, but she has found a home here at bestbet Jacksonville. Arriving at the turn first in her last 6 races, she has proved tough on top and will look that way again in this effort. She might have some that press her throughout but they are going to be hard pressed to take her down before the wire. Sometimes it just comes down in the genes as Mommy Pru Whistler won the Night of Stars race here in a run of 6 wins in a row of her own. If anyone is going to beat her to the turn, or outgame her in this effort, it will be Ww’s Sammy. Sammy is a stakes finalist who loves, and I mean loves, the 8 box. Starting off in her post, she has no excuse not to break and be a big part of this race. She too is short late and it could be costly to her once again tonight. I look for a long battle from this duo and it could come down to a photo separate them at the wire. Watch out for the closers as well. Ddm’s Black Hole can come on with the best of the them late in the race, and from a good post position, she too could surprise them all if she can get out in the conversation at the break. Mac’s Melanie is coming off a huge win and it is hard to ignore. A personal best 30.38 run, the closer got loose early on and raced off alone for the W. The problem here is the 4 box is not the 1 or the 8 box and that is where her last 2 wins have come from. Look for a long drive and for her find her way to the money for the 5th time in her last 7 starts. (6-8-3-4)
Second round action will take place on Friday evening February 26th with all 8 fields of greyhounds returning.
