Racing News

There is no better way to start off a new year than with an exciting stakes race. Starting on January 18th, bestbet Jacksonville is proud to present the $20,000 bestbet Derby. The best 40 greyhounds at the racetrack over 660 yards will go to post and eye a chance a the finals and the title for 2016. Loads on talent is on tap including past stakes winners, finalists, and up and coming stars over the added distance. So let’s take a look at who just might threaten early and often in this year’s 2016 bestbet Derby.

As normal the favorite heading into the this race has to be Tmc’s Sweety Pie. When she is on her game, she is the best 660 greyhound at the racetrack. What is more impressive is that she runs her best against the best at the racetrack. This two time winner of the Orange Park Derby, the only greyhound to every do so, is rested and ready to go for another chance at a crown. Remember she has won 11 of her 14 starts in derby competition, so plan on her to be a force.

The Falcon Kennel gives you a few to consider as well. The runner up in the 2015 Orange Park Derby Shutthefrontdoor and the always trying threat Bostsonstrongiris. Both greyhounds are breaking machines that thrive when they are close to the early lead. If either gets loose early in the rounds, they could put up some big efforts.

Lester Raines has a formidable duo of its own to contend with, well you might even call it a trio as Ocala has one too, here in Kk Whitezin, Mx Midnight Jazz and the stakes monster O Ya Gunsmoke. Whitezin is a closing threat in every race and was a finalist in the 2015 Orange Park Derby. Mx Midnite Jazz is a pup that is loving the move to 660 and has posted up wins in 5 of 8 efforts over the route, and we all know about O Ya Gunsmoke. He was 2nd in the 660 leg of the Holiday Stakes and was a finalist in the 2015 Orange Park Derby, and the 2015 bestbet Derby.

J & J Calabro brings a trio of their own impressive looking greyhounds into this race, and even though they lack experience, they have all looked stellar over the added distance. These puppies are the real deal and if Lk’s Picketwire, Mercury Morris, or Raiders Bacardi decide that they want to run, they are going to surprise a bunch of people in the process. All have talented and I feel that this race is not too big for any of them. Sleepers yes, but you never know until you know.

Others you can’t forget about include the recent winner of the 660 leg of the 2015 Holiday Stakes Tempo Rock. Rising to the occasion he too can flash when he wants to and could be a major factor in this race.

The cagey veteran Gs Daisy May might be a bit longer in the tooth now, but you can hardly ignore her 10 stakes race appearances over both distances. She also has had success in the past with a 2nd in the 2014 bestbet Derby and a 4th in the 2015 edition of the Orange Park Derby.

And last but not least, Pj Gotochurch is a recent addition from southland that has flashed some big time early speed and recorded some great front running wins since arriving at bestbet Jacksonville. His break will need to be on point in the rounds as it is the only way that I see him moving on.

Parlay those with some other names you have heard of in the past, you know, Pat C Singed, Macs Ennison, C Ville Wynter, Kane’s Hawkeye, Kane’s Widow, and Ddm’s Orion, and you get a great field of greyhounds competing in this year’s bestbet Derby.
