The Calabro Kennel keeps on keeping on in the $20,000 2016 bestbet Derby. In round 1 they were red hot and had three winners amongst the five stakes races on the card. In round 2 the trend continued on as they scored a pair of victories in the five efforts, and take 2 undefeated greyhounds into the quarter-finals.
Breaking slowly again in the 7th race, Raiders Bacardi worked through traffic around the racetrack, made a huge move up the backside, inched ahead at the far turn, and rocketed home to leave the field in his dust and post up the biggest win on the card. Crossed almost 8 lengths ahead of the rest, he was long gone at the wire, and his 37.64 second clocking was easily the best on the card. Rounding out the field was Pat C Scandal, who gained late for a distance place, the pacesetter Ww’s Kyocera who faded back late but survived to show, and Darx Ida Da Moon who came on late and just missed show and settled for 4th.
Not to be too outdone, Mercury Morris also put up a fantastic effort in the nightcap, the 15th race on the card. Breaking slowly again, he had some work to do, but his determined style of racing would shine through once again. The brother to Raiders Bacardi, Morris gained ground on the leader throughout and put himself in position to have a shot in the stretch. There he shifted gears and came with a surge that saw him overtake the leaders and secure the easy victory at the wire for himself. He crossed almost 3 lengths better than the rest in a speedy 37.74 seconds romp. Also coming from nowhere, ok well 5th at the far turn, was the place finisher Tk Farther Along. His unrelenting drive at least made it interesting late. Third was the pacesetter Pat C Lulu, who was just outclosed in the deep stretch here, and Kane’s Hawkeye rounded out the superfecta with an even chasing effort.
The other three winners on the card were new and the betting public though they none of them were really contenders. All went off at over 6-1 and each proved that with a good break and a tough mentality, you can do what others think you cannot.
Leading the way for Red Oak Racing was Ww’s Corolla in the 9th race. This must have been the RS version or something as Corolla broke close, took over quick command and never looked back. She increased her lead with every step she took around the racetrack, and at the wire she found herself all alone. Crossing almost 7 lengths better than anyone else in this field, her 37.71 clocking was the second fastest on the night. Making up ground throughout, and overcoming a slow, slow, break was Hioctanebill. Try as he might he couldn’t catch up as he let the leader get too far away too early on. Still a strong effort, just not a winning one. He was next best. The chasing Temp Rock drifted back late and settled for show as Kane’s Widow never varied and was in the mix with the rest for place, but lost the photo and took home the final spot in the superfecta.
Pj Alabama gave a stellar performance in the 11th race on the card as she beat the box and left the field from the get go. Stretching out her lengths as the race went on, from 4 to 5 to 6 at the wire, she was never really challenged at all in this effort. Breezing to the victory in 37.86 seconds, Alabama was brining the tide tonight. Second best was Gs Daisy May. A good break and effort from the cagey veteran, but no match on this occasion for the big dog up front. Shutthefrontdoor chased throughout in third and Mx Midnight Jazz made up some ground to complete the superfecta.
Even though it might have not been as flashy as the rest, Herstal’s effort might have been the most impressive of the evening. Coming to run, She stuck her nose out in front at the start and gave a gritty determined effort from that point on all the way to the wire. Talk about gut check time, stalking the pace the entire way was the former stakes finalist, and big time closer, Kk Whitezin, but time after time after time Herstal turned away the challenge and found a way to get to the wire on top for the win. Sure it might have just been a nose, but it was enough to score her 19 points. Whitezin settled for place after a winning effort, and they were followed by Duchess Olga in show and the flying late two time derby champ Tmc’s Sweety Pie in 4th.
The quarter-finals of the bestbet Derby will run on Monday evening January 25th at bestbet Jacksonville. The field was cut down to 4 races and as the fields get smaller, the action heats up.
