What an exciting race it is going to be in the finals of the 2014 First Coast Derby. Loads of talent and some drew good post positions, and some drew tough post positions. Let’s look at just where they all ended up and a look at how the race should play out.

The 2014 First Coast Derby will run in the 11th race on the card for Saturday evening February 1st at bestbet Orange Park. This race is a good mix of breakers, chasers, and closers, but someone has to come out on top, so let’s get into the thick of things.
Beating the box and making everyone work should be Ww’s Sweetie and Snj Black Porter. Both greyhounds are monsters when they can get their noses in front, and if they want a chance to win, that is just what they are going to have to do in this effort. Both have great post positions to break from, but Sweetie has less early speed flanking her at the break. This is the reason that I see her outrushing Porter to take the early lead heading through the early turn. Porter should be right there along side, but will give up a few lengths as he swings wide in coming into the frontstretch. Also within striking distance should be the best posted greyhound in the bunch, Gs April. Finally she gets a rail post and that should get her out of the box much better in this effort. Sweetie should continue to set the pace on the lead and the others should just chase, and chase, and chase her all the way to the stretch. Here is where it is going to get interesting. If there is any trouble behind her early on, Sweetie could easily steal enough lengths to hold on, but I think the closers will have their due in this race at the finish line. Porter will gain, but I think April is the one to beat. Remember her first 660 race where she broke quickly, she won by 10 full lengths over a grade A field in 37.18. If she is that close here, that race will be hers too lose. That closing speed will come in handy, but the post position is the reason that she gets home tonight. She just missed beating Sweetie in qualifying by a nose, and her she will have a much cleaner trip and find a way to get it done. It is going to be close, but I think she win the photo for the victory. Sweetie will run a gallant effort, but be just a tad too short at the wire, and Snj Black Porter will be in the conversation from box to wire and make this race one to talk about for many years to come. Rounding out the superfecta should be the best closer in the bunch, Gs Sidney. If she could ever get out of the box, she would be a threat to win almost every race. She will come from way, way, way back off the pace, but that tremendous late charge will be too late to challenge the leaders. Flying by many, she runs a big race, but just good enough for 4th. Picks (1-2-6-4)
