The Semi-Finals are upon us and soon we will know just who will be going home and who will continue on to the finals of the 2013 JGR Puppy Stakes.
These races will take place on our SPECIAL MEMORIAL DAY MATINEE on Monday May 27th at bestbetOrangePark. Just three races remain and the best of the best will be vying for the points and a chance at making the elite eight for Saturday evening.
Starting off in the 7th race on the card, you have to like the chances of Ww Sparks Flying to repeat. No way can you ignore that near record time, 30.18 seconds, last time out and she is poised to do it again from a similar post position. With a 6th place effort in round 1, she might just need the win if she wants to move on. Pressing her should be the converted router M’s Grandpa Fred. Fred has not set the world on fire in the stakes, but he has not missed the money and has been in the mix at the finish line in all 3 efforts. The outside post will aide his shot here and look for him to be a factor again. Double winners Topline Pursuit and Pat C Stonewall both can’t be ignored either in this effort. They know how to get to the early lead and how to maintain that margin all the way to the finish line. Both greyhounds when clear have the tools to wire this field on the front end, so don’t be surprised if one of them decides to break and pulls off the big time upset again in this effort. (3-7-5-1)
In race 11 the competition heats up as we get a pair of two times winners battling it out for the same kennel. Ww’s Ignite Fire failed to break and get room early in the quarter-finals and saw up perfect streak come to an end with a 7th place finish. Here she is posted better outside and looks to put up an effort like she did in round one where she won by 7 lengths in a personal best time of 30.43 seconds. Trying to derail her kennelmate will be Ww’s Musician. Frankly I think she is still the one to beat in this race as she will be in the lead from the get go. Her problem is that she can be caught from behind, and with all the late speed that Fire has, she is going to be hard pressed to last to the wire and win. She took has won 2 of the 3 rounds and was leading in the first before surrendering in the stretch. Look for a first round effort from Musician as well as she sets the pace and gets overtaken near the wire to place. The hot and cold running breaker Kiowa Mat Marty is in the mix here too. He won in round 2 in a special effort, but say in the box in the other two rounds for a 4th and an 8th place finish. He is tough when he can get out of the box well and it is going to take a tail on fire effort early here if he wants a chance at the finals. If he can steal a lead early, he might have a shot at the win today. Dutch Cinnabun is a good closer that has tried hard late when she was clear in the stakes. Forget her last rough trip and focus on the post position back in her wheelhouse in this effort. If she can get around in the conversation, she should be able to pick up some lengths on the field and find a way to finish in the money once again in this effort. (8-4-6-2)
Race 11 favors the inside part of the racetrack as the big time names just happened to wind up all next to each other at the start. Back to back winner Razorbingo draws the railest of post positions in this effort and with a promptly start, this once could be over early on. No one to get in his way, and no real speed around him at the break, he should be unabated to the front end today. Once in the clean air he is going to be tough to catch, so let’s see if any of the chaser can get it done or not in this occasion. Making the leader work will be the rest of the inside breakers who have all finished in the money in all three of their efforts in the stakes so far. The daunting duo of Ww’s Cous and Ww’s Death Row both look the part of spoilers, but the biggest threat might just come from Dutch Rudy. Rudy is the only greyhound in the field with final round experience, he was in the finals of the 2013 James J Patton Silver Cup, and absolutely loves to start from the rail post positions. His big late rush will come in handy in the stretch and if he can lock up with Bingo heading to the turn, it will be an interesting finish for sure in this effort. Both Red Oak entries have 6 straight efforts in the money and both might be overdue for the top spot as neither has won in their last 4 efforts. Both will need to break big in order to win, so let’s see if they are up to the challenge in this effort today. (1-4-2-3)
