Quarter-Final time for the 2012 Jacksonville Juvenile, and as the fields get smaller the competition gets bigger in the quest for the title and the trophy.
Just 4 races remain for Friday evening, the 5th, 9th, 10th, and 12th on the card, and in each there are several greyhounds that have a chance to pull off the victory. These races are pretty tough, so we are going to do our best to give you the insight that will get you home a winner.
Five round winners in the 5th race on the card, and in a field this tough, you have to find a way to rise above the rest. Ww Petty Cash gets the one box that for me is the difference maker against this field. She won in round 1 gave a gallant effort in round two finishing 2nd by a head to Lk’s Now R Never. From here she gets out again and that will be bad news for the competition. Kennelmate Ww’s Polar Creek has back to back big efforts in the stakes, including a win last time out. She will need to break to contend as the post is less than desirable here in the 5 box. Braska Char looks to keep the mojo going tonight. Hot off a win, this strong closer will be a late challenge to the leaders, and Pat C Proper must find her break again if she is going to have a shot to post up another effort that saw her win in round number 1. (1-5-4-8)
Race 9 is all about the closers and that includes just about everyone in this race. So who is the best of the best? Who can get it done? I like Ww Head First! He won in round 2 and was just off in third in round one and in both he closed strong from just off the pace to get into contention at the wire. Sure the 4 box is not the 1 box, but he likes it midtrack and gets the extra room early with the empty box. Watch for him to see the lead late and take home the win. The rest of the picks need to rebound after a rough trip in round 2, but all of them have it inside of them as they were all in the quiniela in round 1. Dutch Velda saw her in the money streak end in round 2, and she is looking to get back on track here. She has great closing speed and will use it to her advantage in this race. Watch out for her at the wire. Gs Hilda also can come on strong with the best of them in the stretch and the outside post might actually help her in this effort. Bringing the BAM late, she makes her appearance known at the wire. Lk’s Liberty is the wildcard here. If he gets around cleanly and into stalking position early, he might be able to pull off another upset, just like he did in the first round of the stakes. (4-6-7-2)
Now for the toughest stakes race on the card, the 10th, and Now is the time for Lk’s Now R Never to solidify his spot in the finals with yet another victory. Never has been money since returning for the stake after a rest and his break has been a critical part of his success. Once in front, he is oh so tough to beat, and he is going to need every advantage that he can must against a field in which 7 of the 8 greyhound has not missed the ticket in the two rounds of the stakes. Former router, and 550 closing machine, Pat C Abileena V will be picking up lengths throughout again in this race and for the third straight time, she will be just a little too late to get things done. Finishing second to Now R Never in round one, she follows suit in this effort. Atascocita Hoot has great breaking ability and should be an early threat in this effort. The one box does nothing but better his chances here, but being short late is going to cost him once again tonight. Ww’s Wyvern is a solid chaser that can come on a bit at the end of the race. So far in the stakes he has taken to the task and lived up to his abilities with a pair of money finishes. Tonight he will give her all from a better post position, but still should be best of the rest in this effort. (6-5-1-2)
Capping off the Quarter-Finals in the 12th race, the other undefeated greyhound, Ww’s Mile Stone, will stretch his win streak to 4 straight races. With speed to burn late, this closer is breaking and that really is a problem for any greyhounds that he will encounter around the oval. he has left everyone in the stretch and has not even been challenged in any of the rounds so far. Even though he likes to race on the rail, he gets room early in the 5 box here, and last time out it was good enough for a 5 length win. No matter the lead, he finds a way to get it done. Effortless Style is the most experienced in the stakes and loves running from the rail post positions. Everything is going for him again in this effort, but he needs to put it all together if he wants to pull off the upset. He is short late though, so he will need to steal a lead if he wants to survive at the finish line and take home the top prize tonight. Lk’s Striker might be lacking on starts, but the one thing for sure that he is not lacking is HEART! This greyhound can close with the best of them over the 550 course, and there is no doubt in my mind that he will be flying up at the finish line again to challenge for the win. She got it done in round 1 of the stakes, and could pull off the longshot win again in this effort. Gavotte also is a closer that will be making up lengths on the leaders in the deep stretch once again. He has not won so far in the stakes and is hungry to get there. If he wants a chance to sit at the big table tonight, he will need to come out of the box better at the break. (5-1-2-8)
For the Semi-Finals, running on Monday December 3rd, the field will be shrunk down even more and only the best of the best will get an opportunity to get into the elite 8 and contend for the championship on Saturday evening December 8th.
